Wonder Talks: Bibi Sánchez a Talented Latina Performer representing Mexican Culture in New York City
Today, we're thrilled to chat with one of the most exciting talents from Mexico, who's made a big splash both at home and internationally. Her journey from local productions to the amazing stages of Manhattan, has been nothing short of inspiring.
BIBI SÁNCHEZ!
Most recently, Bibi Sánchez participated in the prestigious Univision Upfront event, sharing the stage with international artists like Shakira and Becky G.
Bibi originated the role of “Helo” in the original Off-Broadway musical “Barba: A Body Percussion Musical” presented in New York's Pregones PRTT with a SOLD OUT RUN. Her role highlighted her acting skills and adaptability, as she had to learn body percussion. The musical was written and composed by Carlos Bauzys and Kim Bixler, and directed by renowned Broadway director and choreographer Luis Salgado.
Other credits include the original play "Stay" at The Vino Theatre by Mexican playwright Andrea Azomoza, "How to Not Unlive Yourself" by Mexican playwright Rula A. Muñoz for New York Theatre Workshop at La Mama, and various performances in cabarets in Manhattan in the prestigious Don’t Tell Mamma, and Green Room 42.
Her last collaboration was singing in Spanish with "Something From Abroad," a theater company created by Mexicans that performs at St. Marks Theatre in co production with Frigid New York
To make sure everyone can enjoy this conversation, we'll be conducting the interview in English. We'll talk about her amazing career, the cool projects she's working on, and what keeps her motivated behind the scenes. Let 's dive in!
Wonderdust:
Welcome! It's a pleasure to have you here today. To start, can you tell us a bit about your latest project and what excited you most about it?
Bibi:
Thank you! It's great to be here. My latest project was actually a Gala for PACT (Protect All Children from Trafficking) Gala in Midtown Manhattan, in which I performed an excerpt of the original musical Barba. We did body percussion and had so much fun.
It was an absolute pleasure to be part of the selected 7 performers from the cast to do this. Thanks to Luis Salgado the director of the production, Carlos Bauzys the composer and Kim Bixler for the book and lyrics. And of course Frances Tirado for the invitation to this Gala.
Wonderdust:
That sounds fascinating. We understand that for Barba you had to learn body percussion, how was the process of preparing for such a complex role?
Bibi:
Preparing for Helo was intense. I did a lot of research to understand the rhythms of the Barbatuques and practice after rehearsals, but I truly believe that my Tap training helped me a lot during the audition and the whole process, rhythm is everything to me. But yes, having to sing, act and dance while making music with my body haha, definitely intense. It was honestly the best experience ever. I really want to thank Revolución Latina, the group I am part of in New York for the opportunity to explore this Off Broadway new musical.
Wonderdust:
Wow Bibi, that sounds like a lot of work…
Bibi:
Yes, it had its challenges. But you know, Latin productions feel like home, there's a sense of camaraderie and cultural understanding that makes the process smooth. And being able to do theater here in international productions… It's amazing. I feel challenged to adapt to various working styles and collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds.
Wonderdust:
So we understand that you really embrace Mexican culture in your projects?
Bibi:
Ufff, a lot of what I do is that. I am so proud I´ve been able to really showcase that I am a Hispanic Mexican Woman. For starters, I am part of Wincey Co. a theater company that does shows in school, we have over 10 repertory shows and I always play the Latina Characters in kids assemblies of over 500 spectators. I have also performed in various Cabarets where I speak spanish, and when you introduced me you mentioned it, but as a Mexican I’ve originated roles of Mexican playwrights too and presented them in Off Broadway theaters in Manhattan. So yes, A VERY PROUD MEXICAN.
Wonderdust:
On that note, how do you feel about working in the same event as Shakira ?
Bibi:
Ahhhh! hahaha honestly, amazing, blessed, just, blessed. Every single person that touches your life opens doors for you, and the rest is the training. I am so thankful that I’ve been able to prepare myself to be ready in these situations and it is just a pleasure to get bigger and better opportunities everyday. Thank you Salgado Productions for this opportunity.
Wonderdust:
Bibi, just know that we are so proud of you. You've achieved significant success in your career. What advice would you give to aspiring actors from Mexico looking to break into the international scene?
Bibi:
Persistence is key. Sounds very mainstream, but never ever give up on your dreams. Don’t ignore your callings, don’t ignore the desires of your heart, go for it. Don’t listen to the people who insist that you can’t, nor get discouraged by rejection, it’s going to be hard, but everything is doable. Networking is crucial too; build relationships and seek mentors who can guide you. Be humble to learn in every single step of your career, and when you are given an opportunity, work hard and be grateful. But, most importantly, stay true to yourself and your roots. Your unique background is your strength.
Wonderdust:
Wow Bibi, thank you so much for your advice… You are really an example for the younger kids with big dreams. I have one final question. Balancing a busy career and personal life can be challenging. How do you manage it?
Bibi:
It definitely is a challenge, but I've learned to prioritize and manage my time effectively. Having a supportive family and friends helps immensely. I make sure to take time for myself. Aside from dance classes, I like to exercise by doing indoor cycling. I also found conversations through facetime with my loved ones in Mexico, a huge part of my wellbeing. It's important to recharge and find a balance to avoid burnout.
Wonderdust:
What's next for you? Are there any upcoming projects or goals you're particularly excited about?
Bibi:
Yes! I am doing a Cabaret “Villain Flair” with my friends Celia Zaga and Frida Mancilla at the Green Room 42 on July 1st 2024 at 9:30 pm New York Time. It is really exciting because we have an initiative called “Muy Muy Productions” to help more international artists showcase their talent. I will perform a very fun song.
Wonderdust:
That’s amazing!! Is there a way we can watch it from Mexico?
Bibi:
You can actually buy a ticket to see the livestream! I'll give you the link so you can share it.
Wonderdust:
Perfect, I will leave it at the end of this interview! Thank you Bibi, we wish you the best in everything that you do! Talk soon.
Bibi:
